About my approach, qualifications and experience:
The therapy I use, which I can offer in English and Spanish, depends on what you, my client/couple/family presents as important and your preferences. Whatever the tool used I always aim to create a non-judgemental, non-critical, empathic and supportive environment where we work as a team acknowledging your strengths and building resilience while improving communication skills and problem solving. I like to identity repetitive patterns which do not work, frame issues in a positive light and keep an eye on what is needed on a practical level finding solutions to problems. Together, with mutual respect for our respective expertise (you on your issues and background, me on a range of individual and couples issues) we identify goals and focus on how you can pursue them.
I have worked privately face to face and online (which is a mode of working rather than a method) with a range of clients, as individuals and couples, from all over the world. I have lived and worked as a therapist and social anthropologist in the US, UK & Latin America and think it is vital to understand problems in their context. Using a culturally sensitive approach or cross cultural therapy is most obvious with couples from different cultures or expats who live abroad. However I use a culturally sensitive therapy whatever method I may be using and actually whoever I might see because we all live in a particular cultural context which comes from our family history and our present.
I view myself as an expert and a professional well trained in the science of individual, couple and family development and psychotherapy change processes. Being an expert, however does not mean being authoritarian. The change process we embark on together requires collaboration between us and drawing on your expertise about yourself and you relationships. I may set the treatment course and focus (depending on your needs) and then help you to understand, express and change the patterns that do not work and so on.
With regards to my training and experience, I am a British trained clinical psychologist, family therapist and couples therapist/counselor and social anthropologist with over twenty five years experience. I have studied and trained at top academic and professional institutions in London including: University College London, Institute of Psychiatry, London, Institute of Marital and Family Therapy, London, London School of Economics and Political Science. I have worked as an individual therapist and couples counselor in Mental Health and Marital and Family therapy therapy clinics in Boston and London. I have also worked as an anthropologist in Latin America and the UK specialising in work on recuperating from violence and trauma.
